Spirit Lake, IA - First Presbyterian Church

Spirit Lake, IA

The word “Presbyterian” is the Greek word for Elder and refers to the fact that our church is governed by a board of elected Elders called the Session. The Presbyterian Church grew out of the 16th century Protestant Reformation that broke from the historic Catholic church over differences in doctrine. Below you will find some of the themes that have been important to us as we have sought to be faithful to Christ as the church.

We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the only Savior of the human family. He was miraculously born of the Virgin Mary, lived His life in perfect obedience to the will of God, and died on the cross as a sacrifice to offer forgiveness to all people. Death could not keep Him and He rose from the grave and now offers the same promise of resurrection to his people. We follow the risen Christ believing that He continues to lead us through the scriptures and by the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

We believe that God is one, perfect in holiness and power, without beginning or end and exists in the mysterious unity of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

We believe that God created a world of beauty and perfection for His joy and for the delight of men and women, but the power of sin and the choices of humans corrupted the creation and left us separated from God and unable to cleanse ourselves from the reality of disobedience.

We believe it is only through the power of grace that the power of sin can be broken. It is a complete and undeserved gift from God. We neither earn nor accomplish our forgiveness; we simply receive it from the hands of our Heavenly Father. In the grace of God through Christ, we are renewed to live a life which gives glory to God. Salvation is found only in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and the victory of his resurrection.

We believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God and God’s gift to the church. Though it was written by men, it is beyond the limitations of men as God’s spirit worked in its creation, its transmission, and continues to work in its interpretation and understanding. Through the words of scripture and the voice of God’s spirit, we hear God’s word to us as Christians both for individuals and for the church.
