About Kewanee, IL

Kewanee is a community built upon a great work ethic and neighborly ideals. Kewanee is strategically located an equal distance from the Peoria and Quad Cities metro areas. We are a city of many ethnicities – a melting pot of sorts. The community offers a high quality of life for a very reasonable cost. Kewanee is home to quality health care, public and private schools, Black Hawk College – East Campus, a full range of public services including full-time professional police, fire and emergency medical services, a municipal airport and Amtrak Service. Our community is safe, and a great place to raise a family. Our park district is one of the largest in the state, and can boast of providing a full range of recreational opportunities for citizens of all ages.

Kewanee always welcomes new business and industry, and has worked hard to keep regulations business-friendly while providing incentive programs, including enterprise zone, tax increment financing and a local revolving loan fund to mention a few. The city has partnered with our Kewanee Economic Development Corporation to secure land for two new industrial parks. We can boast of having an available, highly skilled work force, while also partnering with Black Hawk College – East Campus to provide training in many job skills.

Kewanee was founded in 1854 and incorporated as the City of Kewanee on January 18, 1897. The City of Kewanee is a non-home rule unit that operates under the city manager form of government. The City Council is comprised of the Mayor and four Councilmen who are elected at large for four-year terms
