About Wellsville, MO


Wellsville was platted in 1856, and named after Carter Wells, original owner of the land. A post office called Wellsville has been in operation since 1857. Wellsville is a city in Montgomery County. The county has evidence of human habitation from 10,000 years ago, the archaic period of indigenous Americans. An ancient site was found during archaeological excavations at Graham Cave on the Loutre River.

In the early 19th century, European settlement started at a greater pace, after exploration during previous decades by French trappers and British and American fur traders.
